Also called eyelid surgery, blepharoplasty is an aesthetic surgery intervention that aims to improve the appearance of the eyelids, giving a youthful look to the face, more particularly around the eyes. In our surgery in Sousse, blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids or both. The medical procedure is usually to reduce excess skin on the eyelid.
What problems does blepharoplasty treat?
- Sagging skin (less elastic skin) which creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision.
- The fatty deposits that appear as bags in the eyelids.
- Bags under the eyes due to swollen eyelids.
- The drooping lower eyelids which can risk the protection of the eyes.
Intervention
Blepharoplasty is generally performed under local anesthesia
For the operation on the upper eyelids : it is a question of eliminating the excess of eyelid skin but sometimes also the pocket of internal fat. The scar is located at the level of the upper eyelid fold so that it is invisible.
For the operation on the lower eyelids: this is the treatment of fat pockets located under the eye. The incision is made 1 to 2 minutes under the eyelashes.
The duration of the intervention is one hour.
The patient should be bonded to the eyes during the first night of hospital stay.

The length of stay for blepharoplasty is 7 days.
Possible complications to minimize
Aside from complications related to the medical procedure or anesthesia that can occur in any type of surgery, blepharoplasty can be followed by hematoma or infection. These two complications are nevertheless rare and remediable.
The result of blepharoplasty
Generally the result of blepharoplasty surgery is immediate. We can see the difference as soon as the patient leaves the operating room. But during the first 15 days, edemas and bruises will be present around the eyes. It’s a normal reaction to this kind of surgery.
The patient should not worry then and will just have to follow the post-operative recommendations of his doctor.
