Gastric plication, part of the therapeutic arsenal in bariatric surgery, is an operation which consists in reducing the volume of the stomach through a continuous suture by an overlock with nonabsorbable threads, and this, for the purpose of ” help the patient eat less and thus effectively fight obesity.

Principle and mechanism of action

A relatively new procedure, gastric plication is considered a bariatric procedure which should be similar to the Sleeve gastrectomy. This is a restrictive procedure, that is, it can significantly reduce the size of the stomach and thus limit the volume of food ingested. There is no badly absorbing effect in this technique.

This restriction of gastric capacity is achieved by simple suturing of the anterior and posterior wall of the stomach along the large gastric curvature. The stomach volume is reduced by about 70%.

Operation and stay

Fasting for 6 hours is necessary before the operation which will be carried out under general anesthesia by laparoscopy in a period of approximately two hours.

Obviously, in order to prevent thromboembolic complications, a subcutaneous injection of fractionated heparin will be made and painkillers will be administered intravenously.

Following the intervention, it is essential to follow the eating habits provided so as not to compromise efficiency in the months that follow.

Post-operative recommendations

  • Mix and grind the food during the twenty days following the intervention.
  • Chew food well.
